As opposed to what most people know, Parkinson’s disease is not only a movement disorder. It also comes with a wide variety of other symptoms. One of the most common non-motor symptoms is constipation. This condition can be both frustrating and painful, and it is essential to manage it effectively to avoid complications. This is one of my mom’s struggles, it gives her anxiety whenever she feels it’s time, because of how difficult it is for her to pass. Applying the below natural ways is what helps her avoid constipation (Her favorite? Prunes):
Increase fiber intake
(see also Gut Health)
One of the most effective ways to avoid constipation is to increase your fiber intake. Fiber is essential for maintaining regular bowel movements and preventing constipation. The recommended daily intake of fiber is between 25 to 30 grams. Fiber-rich foods include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. Some examples of high-fiber foods include:
- Apples
- Pears
- Berries
- Broccoli
- Brussels sprouts
- Carrots
- Brown rice
- Whole-grain bread
- Almonds
- Chia seeds (I found a really good recipe for this but i couldn’t find where, i’ll edit this post with the recipe once i find it again.)
- Prune
Fiber supplements are also available in the market for easier consumption. You can try Mary Ruth Organics’ Adult Fiber Gummies.
Stay hydrated
Dehydration is one of the leading causes of constipation. It is essential to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, especially water. Drinking warm fluids, such as herbal tea, can also help stimulate bowel movements. It is important to limit your intake of caffeine and alcohol, as they can cause dehydration and exacerbate constipation.
Exercise regularly
Regular exercise can help improve bowel function and prevent constipation. Exercise stimulates the muscles in your intestines, helping to move waste through your digestive system. Even light exercise, such as walking or stretching, can be beneficial.
Practice good bowel habits
Establishing good bowel habits can help prevent constipation. It is important to establish a regular bowel routine and try to use the bathroom at the same time each day. Taking your time and relaxing when using the bathroom can also help. It is important to avoid straining when using the bathroom, as this can cause constipation and other complications.
Consider natural remedies
Several natural remedies can help relieve constipation. Some examples include:
- Flaxseed oil: Flaxseed oil is high in omega-3 fatty acids and can help lubricate the digestive system, making it easier to pass stools.
- Aloe vera: Aloe vera can help soothe the digestive system and relieve constipation.
- Probiotics: Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that can help regulate bowel function and prevent constipation
- Here are the Probiotic Supplements that i know works, because i either used or still uses them:
Constipation is a common problem for patients with Parkinson’s disease, and may either be caused by the disease or the medications taken. Make sure that the benefits you are getting from your medications are greater than the risk with such side effect, if the symptom is indeed from your medication. With the right management, constipation can be effectively managed, improving your overall quality of life. Increasing your fiber intake, staying hydrated, exercising regularly, practicing good bowel habits, and considering natural remedies are all effective strategies.
